Optional Practical Training (OPT)

OPT is a temporary work authorization (one year of employment after graduation) for F-1 visa students to apply their classroom knowledge in a real-world work setting. Students interested in OPT should review the eligibility requirements and click the "Request OPT Authorization" button below.

Eligibility

  • Current F-1 visa status
  • Completion of at least one academic year in full-time F-1 status
  • Enrollment in an academic degree program (ESL students are not eligible for OPT)
  • No prior OPT at the same degree level
NOTE: You do not need to be hired for a job at the time of application. Most OPT applicants secure employment after they apply.

Timeline

Interested students should plan to apply 90 days prior to graduation. Master's and doctorate students may also choose to apply 90 days prior to finishing their coursework. Applying for OPT is a time-intensive process (minimum 90 days of processing time), so don't wait until graduation to apply.
