Social Security Number

A Social Security Number (SSN) is a nine digital number which is assigned to people who are authorized to work in the United States. SSN is used to report your wages to the government and to determine eligibility for Social Security benefits.  

 Who can Apply 

Students in F-1 status are eligible under any of the following circumstances:  
  • Have been offered an on-campus job  
  • Have been granted Curricular Practical Training (CPT) employment authorization
  • Have been granted Optional Practical Training (OPT) employment authorization and have received the Employment Authorization Document (EAD);  

Students in J-1 status sponsored by an American University (Different if sponsor from their home county). 

Scholar in J-1 status and J-2 dependent (after applying for the work authorization). 

How to Apply 

You will need to fill out an application form (http://www.ssa.gov/ssnumber/) and bring the following documents to the SSN office.

Receiving Your Social Security Card and Number:
The Social Security Administration may need some time to verify your current immigration status before they can issue a Social Security card. In most cases, a Social Security card should be mailed to the address you listed on your application form within 14 business days.

Obtaining A Driver's License


Many international students choose to drive while at Duquesne. International licenses are honored in the states but there are certain laws regarding these licenses. It is highly recommended that you apply for a Pennsylvania driver's license. You can check out the PA Department of Motor Vehicles website for information. There are many DMV offices around the Pittsburgh area. The closest to campus is: 708 Smithfield Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15222
